Nestled amidst the majestic peaks of the Himalayas is Kapuche Glacial Lake. Situated at a jaw-dropping altitude of 8,300 feet, this glacial lake holds the distinction of lowest glacial lake in the world. We booked our trip for early April to be sure that we missed Monsoon season. Our local friend secured us a guide, Bimal of Himalayan Dirt, who many of the diplomats living in Nepal use. It’s important to note that you a guide is a MUST for any trekking. It ensures your safety and makes the trek way more manageable.
Kapuche Glacial Lake Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Tangting Village
After a scenic 2 1/2-hour ride from Pokhara, we arrive at Tangting Village. Nestled in the fields of rice paddies, the tea house tents provide a cozy retreat, allowing us to admire the awe-inspiring Himalayas. On a clear day you can see Annapurna II, the 16th highest peak in the world.
Upon a quick late breakfast, you have the choice of doing a 4 hour day hike or relaxing in the platform tents. Personally, after a bout of food poisoning in Kathamandu I chose the latter. Afternoon naps in the crisp Himalayan air did just the trick to get rested for the next day of trekking. The evening is a home cooked meal of Dal Batt and yeti beer!
Day 2: Hugu Goth – Suspension Bridges, Rice Paddies, and a Memorable River Crossing
We begin to notice there is a weather pattern when this high up in the Himalayas. The mornings and nights are cold and crisp, with a swift change to blistering heat and then rain or hail brought on by clouds. Fueled by a breakfast of fresh yogurt, homemade bread, and yak cheese, we set off on an 8-hour hike to the next tea house in Huge Goth.
We continue our trek as it starts to warm up from the morning, crossing the first of several suspension bridges. Along the way, we encounter beautiful views of rice paddies and monkeys on the riverbed. As the rain sets in and the river current intensifies we huddle under a tent for lunch. With the rising river current we hitch a ride in a dump truck for a thrilling river crossing. After what seems like all 4 seasons of weather, we reach camp at Hugu Goth, where a cozy fire awaits us, bringing an end to an eventful day.
Day 3: Arrival at Kapuche Glacial Lake
On this exciting day, we rise to another chilly morning at Hugu Goth. However, the morning sunshine and stunning views uplift our spirits. Equipped with walking sticks made from bamboo by our guide, we embark on the final 2 hour leg of our journey. En route, we witness the strength and agility of local porters from villages near Kapuche. We are treated to the breathtaking sight of Rhododendron, Nepal’s national flower, in full bloom.
After three days of challenging trekking, covering over 25 miles and ascending 2,500 meters, we finally reach Kapuche Glacial Lake. The tranquil, icy blue waters mirror the surrounding snow-capped Himalayan mountains. Embracing the adventurous spirit, we take a daring polar plunge into the glacial lake. It provides much-needed relief for our weary bodies. It’s an unforgettable moment that truly captures the essence of this remarkable journey.
post polar plunge we take a pitstop at a local teahouse in Kapuche for a lunch of dal batt and plotting our spa treatments back in Pokhara.
Day 4: Heading Back to Civilization
As our incredible journey nears its end, we say farewell to our hosts at Huge Goth. We embark on our last hike, a 2-hour hike down to the river bed. We eagerly anticipate the trusty dump trucks that will help us cross the challenging river crossings. With thoughts of hot bucket showers, massages, and the comforts of Pokhara, we reflect on the amazing memories created during this extraordinary trek.
From the jaw-dropping landscapes to the sense of accomplishment that comes with conquering the challenging trails, this adventure is one that offers both physical and spiritual rewards. So, lace up your boots, pack your sense of adventure, and prepare to embark on an extraordinary trek to Kapuche Glacial Lake. Get ready to witness nature’s grandeur and create memories that will last a lifetime.
