San Marino, the charming microstate nestled atop the Apennine Mountains, offers a perfect weekend getaway for those seeking tranquility, stunning landscapes, and world class food. With its rich history and breathtaking views, it’s a must visit. Growing up as a second generation sammarinese, I’m going to share with you my curated itinerary on how to spend a wonderful weekend exploring and enjoy all the best San Marino has to offer. Andiamo!
Day 1: Friday – Exploring the City Center
After arriving in San Marino, check into Hotel Cesare, ideally located in the heart of the city center. Begin your day with a traditional Italian breakfast of cappuccino and crostata, setting the tone & kickstart your day!
After fueling up, you will embark on a long urban hike up to the iconic Towers of San Marino (The Tre Monti!). San Marino has some of the most breathtaking panoramic views especially so when the day is clear and you can see the Adriatic.
During your trek, be sure to indulgs in retail therapy in the charming streets of Città, where you’ll find a variety of shops. My favorite botique is Delí for iconic Italian womenswear and browse through multiple sun glass shops. Tip! San Marino is one of the best places to buy ray bans because they are very discounted.
For lunch, savor the flavors of traditional San Marinese cuisine at Restaurante Spingarda, known for its amazing views of the rolling hills, amazing pizza and wine selections.
After lunch head to Consorzio Vini Tipici di San Marino for a wine tasting experience. Sample the region’s finest wines and learn about their production. This is a super unique experience because only in San Marino does the country own the winery.
In the evening, enjoy a delightful dinner at La Terrazza, a restaurant offering a blend of Italian and San Marinese specialties. Afterward, experience the vibrant nightlife of San Marino at the London Pub, where you can unwind with friends or dance the night away. Day 2: Saturday – A Day at the Beach in Rimini
Start your day with a relaxed morning and savor a late morning Piadina, a traditional Italian flatbread filled with cheese, veggies or meat!
Take your bus from San Marino to the nearby coastal town of Rimini. Once there, head to Beach Club 38-41, known for its pristine shoreline and excellent amenities. Bask in the sun, take refreshing dips in the waters, and enjoy the laid-back beach atmosphere.
In the evening, return to San Marino and indulge in a delightful dinner at La Fratta, a charming restaurant offering a fusion of Italian and international cuisine. With its warm ambiance and homemade pastas, La Fratta promises a memorable dining experience.
Day 3: Sunday – Luxury Outlet Shopping
On your last day in San Marino, it’s time to take home some goodies on a shopping adventure at San Marino Outlet Experience. Newly opened in 2021 (meaning lots of amazing inventory!) you can shop luxury and mid-luxury Italian and global brands, including Twinset, Coccinelle, and PINKO. If you love Italian brands my guide on SHOPPING IN ITALY – BRANDS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT is a great help! The best part about shopping in San Marino? No need to bother with pesky VAT return funds, the tax free discounts are directly applied for NON-EU citizens with a valid passport!
For lunch, head to Osteria da Mazza, renowned for its mouthwatering calamari. Savor the freshest seafood while enjoying the charming ambiance of this local gem.
If you have some extra time before your departure, consider taking a day trip to nearby destinations such as Ancona or Riccione. Ancona, a port city, boasts picturesque views, historical landmarks, and vibrant markets. Riccione, on the other hand, offers beautiful beaches, trendy shops, and a lively atmosphere.
note: If you can arrive on Thursday there’s also a wonderful street market in Borggo Maggiore. Every Thursday from 6 am to 2 pm Borgo Maggiore hosts the traditional market which boasts very old origins. The first market ever held in San Marino was organized in 1243 in Mercatale (Borgo Maggiore’s ancient name). This tradition went on for centuries, together with several trade fairs, the most renowned of which were those selling cattle. Nowadays the Borgo Maggiore market is full of stalls selling a great deal of items for everyday use.) You can take the Funivia down which offer spectacular views while you transend down the mountain!
