Everything You need to Know about Port Lincoln

Port Lincoln may have gotten it’s fame from Cage Diving with Sharks but this quaint South Australia town has a lot to offer. In this article we will cover everything you need to know about the seafood capital of Australia in this Port Lincoln Travel Guide.

Getting to Port Lincoln

There is a limited number of ways to get to Port Lincoln as the town itself is quite small in comparison to other Australian cities.

There are two options to get to Port Lincoln; Flying or Driving. We always opt for flying when on timed trips like this. We took a flight from Carins to Adelaide and then Adelaide to Port Lincoln. The flight is relatively easy and convenient!

For drivers, Port Lincoln is located about 800 kilometers (500 miles) west of Adelaide. It takes around 8 hours to drive there and the journey can be done in a single day. However, you could also break it up and stay in a towns along the way. The drive is incredibly scenic, taking you through the rolling hills of the Yorke Peninsula and the Flinders Ranges.

I recommend flying as the best option if you have limited time and driving if you have extended time and want to see the views! Note: If you venture to Port Lincoln for a cage dive with sharks the charters recommend you arrive 24 hours before as they do not refund no-shows. So its best to plan on to arriving a day earlier than your planned excursion.

Staying in Port Lincoln

Similar to the tours, hotels book up really quickly so it is best to book in advance!

Among the choices is the Marina Hotel and where we stayed. While not the most luxurious it did the trick for a couple days. However, one there is a connecting restaurant nestled on the water with great seafood. Plus it is walking distance to the dock for our shark dive which came in handy!

Another option is the Port Lincoln hotel. This hotel is located downtown and is a nice option if you want to walk around to visit cafes and shops. However, it had already booked up a month before we went. So, if you like this hotel I’d recommend to book right away. If you are planning to do a shark dive, you can organize a pick up from here too!

Things to do & what/where to eat!

Port Lincoln is a popular destination for fishing, whale watching, and National parks. Not to mention the wide array of seafood! We spent three days in Port Lincoln. To make the most of it, we booked a day tour with a local guide on Untamed Escapes. It was one of the highlights of our trip. If you end up booking it, ask for Beebs, he was the best!

The Untamed Escapes Tour covers:

  • Coffin Bay Oyster Farm, known for the freshest oysters in the world
  • Lincoln National Park where we got to see some Kangroos in the wild
  • Boston Bay Winery to do local wine tasting

That evening our guide recommended Del Giornos for dinner. We were again delighted by the service & food. One highlight that I will remember forever is how wonderful the people were. Our cab ended up cancelling on us and so the owner of the restaurant drove us back to our hotel. That is hospitality you can’t beat!

If you have the time consider staying a week to take in all Port Lincoln & the Eyre Peninsula have to offer.

Enjoying some fresh Oysters & Champagne on our Coffin Bay Oyster lease tour.
