5 Things You Should Know Before Traveling to Nepal

Nepal is a beautiful country with some of the best trekking the world has to offer. If you are coming from the United States, it can be a bit of a culture shock. Here are 5 things you should know before traveling to Nepal. I love creating these as a way to reflect on my learnings from our travels and that hopefully help you plan your trip! 5 things you should know before traveling to Nepal

1. Cash is King

Credit Cards are not widely accepted everywhere! So be sure to get cash before you arrive and bring your debit card to take out cash while there. You will need it for taxis, food, and any type of excursions.

2. Take care of your Health

Travel insurance is a MUST! Nepals health systems are not as easily accessible and especially if you are doing a trek this covers you in case of emergency. I also recommend to bring medicine with you as a just in case. (tip: make sure you are also up to date on your vaccinations and if you need to get any for where you are traveling. Passport Health is a good one to go to and check)

3. Prepare for Visa Requirements ahead of time

Fill out your visa online before you go! This will save you so much time at the airport. The airport is small and there are mainly large flights coming in that can have long queues. Filling it out online before assures that you can skip that part and pay and be on your way!

4. Trekking is a must

The natural beauty is unlike anything you will ever experience. If I would have known just how spectacular the Himalayas would be, I would have organized to stay for a few more treks. Waking up to views like this every morning was one of the most amazing things I have ever experienced. if you’re feeling adventurous you can do the Annapurna circuit or trek to the Lowest Glacial Lake in the world.

5. Walking in Kathmandu is best left for the locals

Unlike Europe, getting around Kathmandu can be an adventure. You can walk to places nearby but google maps and others can be misleading in terms of how to get to places. Plan to taxi or hop on a vespa to get most places in a timely manner!
